Nominees:

President: Kathleen Barnhill
I have been a part of the ESF graduate community for going on 4 years, in both MS and PhD capacities.  As such, I understand the joys and perils of both processes.  Further, I have been incredibly active in GSA for the past year, serving on multiple committees, both within GSA and the wider ESF committee.  Some examples of my service have included - the GSA Professional Development Committee & the GSA Speakers Committee; the ESF Committee on Instruction & the ESF Subcommittee on Instructional Quality.  I have enjoyed serving the graduate committee and all of the opportunities that it has afforded me, including the relationships I continue to build and foster within ESF.  I look forward to the prospect of stepping up to strengthen my leadership and advocacy for the graduate study body here at ESF.

Webmaster: Katherine D’Amico
I feel that I am very well qualified for this position for a number of reasons.  As an undergraduate I minored in computer science and have a background in website programming and design.  I served as the GSA webmaster this past academic year and while in that capacity have launched a new GSA website.  I have been involved with the GSA for over a year and am committed to working with the new officers next year to continue the great work that the GSA does.  The website is a key communications tool for the GSA and as webmaster I will ensure that it remains informative, professional, and accessible to the graduate student community.

Secretary: Godfrey J. Ofezu
I am very talented person, a graduate of ESF and continuing PhD student at ESF. I have interpersonal skills, and good communication skills. I have good minute taking techniques and I believe I can serve GSA in this capacity as a secretary.

International Chair: Braulio A. Quintero
The most important thing that I can bring to GSA is my outgoing personality. I also have good organizational skill and enjoy working in groups. Through out my academic career I have developed strong relations with Latin American scientist in the US and PR that could be invited to talk at ESF. We could start an international scientist conference series that could include not just Latin American, but scientist of other nationalities. I was also thinking that there is a significant international group at ESF that could be brought closer together with other activities other than just the international dinner.  For example, we could do an international cinema night, in we could showcase environmental or human rights documentaries. I was also thinking that we could do student-lead discussion panels of United States environmental and economic policies in Latin America, Africa and Asia.

Professional Development Chair: Whitney Lash Marshall
I am running to serve a second time as chair of the professional development committee after what I believe was a very successful inaugural year for this GSA committee. Organizing this committee from the bottom up has been both a challenging and rewarding experience, as we worked very hard to understand the professional development needs of the graduate student body and translate these needs into skill building and networking events. I have worked very hard to network both on campus and to ESF alumni to provide the best panelists and connections for current students, and under my leadership, we as a committee have been able to meet all our goals for this academic year. We provided three very successful panels on preparing for publication, careers for ESF graduate students, and preparing for thesis defense, which involves every department on campus in a workshop setting. We also have working with the ESF Committee on Research to create the first-ever Graduate Student Spotlight on Student Research session that will provide MS and PhD students the opportunity to showcase their research in a poster session or an oral presenation and compete for awards. Despite all this success, I feel there is a lot more that I would like to work with this committee to accomplish, including events with career services, providing grant writing workshops, and continuing to actively encourage interaction amongst the departments on campus. I would be honored for the opportunity to serve in this position again on GSA and continue to work towards providing graduate students at ESF with the skills and contacts they need to become successful professionals.

SU Graduate Student Organization Representative: Abigail Larkin
I am an EFB masters student currently serving as a representative for the department in GSA.  I am interested in representing the link between GSA (ESF) and GSO (SU) in the upcoming GSA elections.  My involvement in GSA has been a highlight of my current year and I have learned a lot that I would like to continue to develop in the upcoming academic year.

EFB Dept. Representative (three positions available):
Lewis Grove
I bring a natural leadership ability, great communication skills, a passion to make daily life better for every one of the grad students who spend so much of t
heir time in Illick, and an acute recognition of the needs of all ESF grad students to balance their hard work here with the need to have fun!

Jim Arrigoni
Although I am a beginning PhD student, I received an MS in the conservation biology major of the EFB Dept in 2003. At that time, I worked on an international research project that was independently funded, but I was supported during the semesters through teaching assistantships involving four courses and four professors. Currently I am working under a research assistantship on a multi-year wetland restoration project located at the Heiberg Research Forest in Tully, so I have a relatively long-term interest in the direction of the GSA, my department, and ESF, as well as a strong attachment continually tethering me to the local area. I feel that these longstanding, substantial, and disparate experiences along with my future plans give me a diverse and reliable perspective with which to represent the EFB Department to the Graduate Student Association, and vice versa.

Yazmin Rivera
As an EFB representative to the GSA I will not only represent the graduate students interests but also expect to serve as a bridge to the benefit of the department.

Environmental Studies Dept. Representative: Michael Dimpfl
I'm a masters student in the Environmental Studies program, interested in the human dimensions of water use, the sociology of household systems that use water and other resources, fear as a social control mechanism, and hope maybe one day we'll get the drinking water out of the toilet. I love being at ESF and think I'd do well to represent the EST department at the GSA. In my spare time, I can usually be found listening to records with my good ear, eating food featuring kale, and spending as much time outside with my imaginary dog as the weather permits.

LA Dept. Representative: Jordan Kelley
After having a year more experience in the program I have a better idea of the needs of the students  in the program I plan to distribute a survey after mid-terms so that we can better serve our students needs in the landscape architecture department.

PBE Dept. Representative (one position available):

Shiuli Mahmud
I am Shiuli  Mahmud, a Final Year PhD Student of the Department of Paper and Bioprocess Engineering (PBE) at SUNY ESF and have been serving as the Department Rep of PBE in GSA since 2008. Over the last few years, I had the wonderful opportunity to be the liaison between my department and GSA to exchange information on what the Graduate students expect from GSA and how GSA is responding to support their expectations. I have always participated actively in every decision making processes and have been an active member of different working committees of GSA over the years. I have also served as a panalist for different programs (Candidacy Panel of Students, New Students Orientation Panel, etc) of GSA to assist the graduate community. Along with it, I have always volunteered to be a mentor to the new students in my department to help them cope with the new environment. I am very connected with some institutions/ professional organizations both on and off-campus (CSTEP, SU, TAPPI, PIMA, YP Committee, different local NGOs ) as well as serve as board member of some such important committees  related to paper industry, which makes  me an excellent source of outside (Industry) information for the graduate students of my department. If I get selected this year, along with maintaining the previous duties, I am looking forward to establish a better communication process between the graduate students and  faculties of my department by increasing their interests and participation in the different GSA activities both at the department and college level. I believe that good communication is the key to a successful negotiation.  It will help the college administration understand necessities of the graduate community better to serve them better. On the other hand, the students will have a better chance to understand the limitations of the administration and their expectations from students. It will be my pleasure and honor, if I get selected to serve my fellow students of  the Department of PBE again.

Bhavin Vijay Bhayani
In writing to you, I wish to convey my interest in running for the position of Department Representative for the students of Paper and Bioprocesses Engineering. Since I am already well acquainted with many of the personnel that I hope to represent, many of whom knew me as either a graduate or undergraduate, there is probably no shortage of people who can confirm that I have shown myself to be dependable, aproachable, reliable, and easy to work with, in the performance of my duties. Previous leadership positions include serving as the vice-president of Friends of India in Clarkson University, where I was responsible for activities including event management, financial and cultural which have given me experience in building community and promoting Indian heritage.
